I just finished When She Woke by Hillary Jordan. This book pissed me off so much, but for all the right reasons. It’s a dystopian novel that describes an America not too far in the future. This America is very religion oriented. This view of faith is not one I hold, so a lot of the church ideologies in this book bugged me for this reason.

Also, instead of putting criminals in prison, they make them a Chrome. This means they literally change the color of the skin based on the crime (red is abortion, possibly murder in general. Orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple Chromes exist as well). Chromes are the new minority. They are often discriminated, and have almost no protection from the law. Although this really irked me, I got an idea of what racial discrimination was like 40 years ago.

There was one thing that rather intrigued me (and hasn’t left my mind since I read it a week ago!). Hannah—the main character, a Red—was on an ‘underground railroad’ for Chromes. Along the way, one of the people sold her as a sex slave. They drugged her with Thrall, a drug designed for rape. It makes the victim extremely compliant and actually BEG for more. The victim has full consciousness and memories of the events. While this drug scares the crap out of me, I can’t help but want it.

All in all, this book was amazing! Despite all the annoying things, I really found it an interesting insight into a possible future. If you like dystopian books, read it. Just know that you’ll *hate* the ending. I almost threw the book across the room…and I was in school.
